Hello all! I would like to remove my oil pan on our ‘30 Tudor clean it out really good seeing we don’t know when and if it has ever been done. My confusion is Les Andrews Red book says place the oil pump back into the block a small Jack placed between the frame and the block with a 1/4 inch rod inserted to the side plug hole will aid in holding it in place. My question is how is the Jack and the 1/4 inch rod not in my way when reinstalled the oil pan? I guess I can’t picture it in my mind. Would anyone have any pictures by chance? Thanks fellas…..

Get one of these little fellows. Insert it into the side of the block, where there is now a small pipe plug, and run the screw in to hold the oil pump in while you remove the pan. You also use it to install the oil pan. Once the pan is in, remove this little holder and reinstall the plug.

A slip of paper between the side of the pump and the block as a wedge is what I use to hold the pump in place.

This story is of a tragedy with an oil pump installation. Many moons ago, I had a Model "A" engine rebuilt by an experienced shop. It was a year or two later when I put the car on the road, and the engine ran fine around town. Then I drove the car on the highway, and after a mile or two, the engine started to clatter and knock. When I drove it slow, it was quiet running. Later on I dropped the oil pan, and to my horror, I found the oil pump was tied into position with clothesline. The clothesline disintegrated and clogged the oil pump screen. By the time I found the problem, the shop was out of business.

Lenny, Don't forget to open the port at the top of the pump (where the oil flows out to the engine from) to 7/32 (.218) if it is not out to this size already. Early ones seem to be a little smaller, later ones are a little larger. Make sure that it is thoroughly clean of all chips afterwards. Good Luck !

You could get a small bolt with the same thread size (bring the plug with you to the hardware store) and use it to temporarily hold the pump in place.

The plug thread size is 1/8"NPT, bolts don't come w/that size thread.
