I am at the parts accumulation phase while I tear down my car and get it ready for the fun part (the rebuild). I am confused on the wiring as there are so many options. Can you help me?
First, how many harnesses are there in a 40 coupe? Front harness, engine harness, harness in the passenger compartment, dash harness and tail light? Is there somewhere I can buy all of it together? What/who do you all recommend? I'd like original style wiring. Thank you!

Bauer Electronics makes a lot of the wire kits that are sold by parts sources.
Rhode Island Wiring and Narragansett Reproductions were founded by the Pease brothers but they have separate operations now. I think Ed (Rhode Island Wiring) died back in 2018 but they are still operating as far as I know. They started out in business together but didn't stay together for one reason or another. Both companies make good products though. |

High quality original wiring that can be modified to your particular needs like turn signals, etc.

IMO Tyree Harris is the worst possible choice and Rhode Island Wiring is the best.

You know what they say about opinions and belly buttons (I cleaned that up somewhat), everybody's got one. My 2 ¢.

I believe that instead of some cute retort referencing some dysfunctional guy's nether parts, I'd be more inclined to ask David(G) what inherent problems he found with Tyree's products, as well as his comments on the advantages associated with Rhode Island Wiring's products, especially since he seemed pretty adamant about his assertions. I think that David's knowledge and experience have essentially proven his astute judgement when it comes to recognizing quality pieces. Coop . |

I'm asking because I don't know, how much of the wiring that the vendors sell actually comes from Bauer Electronics?

Can't speak for other vendors but I know for a fact YnZ's makes their harnesses in house. I've personally seen their operation and it's impressive.

I got all my wiring harnesses from MACs Auto parts around 12 years ago and till this day i have had no problems. Each harness also came with its own schematic diagram. I really enjoyed doing all the wiring as it was a simple plug and play. The engine and car components that are on the receiving end of the harnesses can be another issue.

Thanks everyone. I’ll check them all out.
I’m mostly going stock but would like to add turn signals. Is it best to just wire those separately or to pony up and have a custom harness made? I’m trying not to get too pricey here as I also have an engine to rebuild, bodywork to do, suspension and blah blah blah!

Coop,
The '32 Harris harnesses that I've been stuck with were improperly constructed and would not fit far enough into the left side wire conduit that attaches to the intake manifold. The end result was that neither the generator output wire nor the distributor input wire were long enough to reach their destination.. When consulted on this shortcoming ( ![]() Rhode Island Wiring is a class act. Their on-the-shelf items match the original Ford engineering drawings in my experience and their custom work for super-rare early variants such as pre-fuse-block, steering column bracket-mounted resistor, RHD '32 V8 full harness was perfect (and reasonable). The have a long lead times, but the wait is worth it. |

Harris may be using Bauer Electronics for cloth covered wire but I don't know for sure. Mac's sold Bauer stuff too. A person can tell the stuff is Bauer made if they look at the diagram sheet that come with the harness purchased. They usually have their name printed on there. Bauer's site indicated that they lacquer coat the cloth wire covering but the harnesses I got some years ago had no lacquer applied at all. It was cheaper but I got what I paid for. I purchased it through Mac's. This was for a 1951 Mercury and it fit fine through the body and that but the wire is a bit larger in diameter than original so I had a hard time getting the wiring for the turn signal switch to run up through the steering column.
The clear lacquer helps the woven cloth covering stay in better condition. It's disheartening seeing how fast the color fades on stuff that has no protective coating. Last edited by rotorwrench; 01-07-2023 at 08:04 PM. |

For my B pickup, I had to go with Rhode Island and they need advance orders. Don't wait. Newc

Sacramento Vintage Ford made their harnesses in house and have for years. As far as I know they still do.
