Up date: We installed the carb after rebuild. Put some oil down two spark plug holes as the huckster had been sitting for a couple of month in an unheated garage. Engine barely turned over with lots of trouble with the starter Found and removed the green-knobbed battery cut out which was corroded and hot. Engine would fire and run a few seconds are quit. We could not get the rpm up over idle. Battery died so we quit. OAT about 50F.

Found a minor exhaust leak in the fore-pipe just before the muffler. We'll plug with Muffler tap and goo. We did not retime.

Further inspection found the emergency brake had the thin pawl installed and that would not catch the ratchet. Will replace with proper pawl.

Any change a mouse is sleeping in the exhaust pipe? When the engine is trying, I 'm seeing fumes coming from the tailpipe. Plus there is no dead stuff smell.

We did install a new carb needle valve assembly and it leaked big time. Another person said that had trouble with the new needle valve. Others?

Your timing is way off. Much too retarded. Check it again and do it exactly like Les Andrews says in his book.

My bud timed it was the Nurex special. I haven't had a shot at it as yet.

Related story. I was a kid learning to time my 54 Merc. I set it perfect according to the book. Smartass me sez to my garage owner Uncle Raeman, damn I'm good. He don't say nuthin...He leans his small belly on the fender and retimed it. No light or nuthin. That baby jumped in performance. Seems to me he needed a coke about that time. Come back Uncle I have many more questions

We went at it again today. Turns out the timing was off(as suggested). I'm not sure why. When we set it months ago we used the neurex timing tool. Then we changed dissys. Did we time the replacement dissy? The owner has running plugs which are taller: does this matter? did we time an original dissy set up with the new wrench? We dunno but the engine fires up and runs great now. Owner is mega-happy! Thanksa ll.

Try a different condenser. Easy to do.

We think we only timed the first dissy. The second one was someone's spare and we just slapped it on. It was a cold and windy and sober day.

Should have had a designated drinker. Too many volunteers, probably.
