Default 2nd serial number found on frame

Perhaps others have seen this before. On a May 31 Coupe some folks I know have found a matching second serial number stamped on the inside of the frame just in front of the brake cross shaft on the drivers side. Interesting.

Did they also find the same s/n on top of the frame rail, by the # 1 body mount ?

Yes the serial number on the frame in the usual spot and on the engine all match.

Is this only on a 31 coupe or also on other years and models ?

My late 31 coupe has the number stamped on three spots, the common spot we all know so well, the spot you show and on the rear cross member on the front. The last the two font styles don't match and aren't neat.

I was wondering the same thing but the font is correct for the ford stamps. I just can't see someone taking the time to repeat the stamping on only one model of the A. Why?

Ooh, I can easily understand why someone would want a VIN or serial number on the frame. When I imported my two cars to Finland, I had over four weeks delay in completing registration b/c the laws here dictate such VIN / sn should be visible on not just the engine, but on the body/frame. The local guy had to call the central office, who had to call the politburo, who had to call the blah blah blah, until finally just the engine stamp was accepted. If only I had a stamped-number on the body that matched my documents...

Easy to believe some underpaid, frustrated DMV official in some US state has more than once rejected car registration b/c the VIN was on only the engine. Yes, it may be ugly and un-original, but easy to imagine it could save lots of aggro. I don't say it should be done, just that I can understand why someone would do it.

Ive seen some original numbers crooked, spaced weirdly, not quite in a straight line before. These were stamped by guys by hand one at a time on an assembly line - as long as it was legible the line inspector didnt care. The guy stamping the cross channels may have been stamping them upside down (sitting on frame from the top side).

Not like today with pin stampers that can draw all sorts of logos and print a 24 digit number in about 15 seconds.

That and having worked in a factory all sorts of weird stuff goes out the door like panels that were test pieces when the pin stamper gun was acting up (think of a fully automatic tatoo gun, one or multiple little sharp pin punches doing a dot matrix print) Some historian somewhere someday will be thrilled and confused when part of a tractor has about 16 stamps all over one plate in random patterns with part numbers pertaining to different model tractors and parts on one piece...Or when the question "when did they change font styles?" gets asked its because it was Tuesday March 14th 2013 at 1:34pm the gun decided to stop printing a certian text style... I think sometimes mystery stampings and parts are found 80 years later and think they carry significant importance when in reality it was someone screwing around, training someone, or out of necessity to keep the line going haha. (yes sometimes when the pin stamped died completely the operators would have to go back to hand stamping - much complaining and much sloppyness haha)

But yes the stamps have been around awhile so many many restoers have stamped thier own in several locations either to be visible for DMV or to hide a number in the event it would be stolen only the restorer would know where additional stampings will be or the area where it should be is too pitted to restamp.

I looked on my May 1930 AA and no number inside the frame.

I did not word it correctly, I should have added "the assembly line at time of manufacture", my bad. I can understand stamping it after leaving the factory but I'm amazed that in this case the actually used the "correct" stamps.
