Default Rope rear main seal in early engine

So at some point I am going to go through the original engine in my 39 Merc. Although it will remain stock in outer appearance I intend to use my 4" crank and 8ba rotating components. Regarding the rear main seal am I correct that the die cast parts in the slinger area are simply replaced by the die cast parts from later engines that can hold the rope seals?

You'll need the lower 19B-6336 holder for the lower rope.

Thanks for the response Ken, but is there not a corresponding upper holder that fits in the block, or is there just a groove that the rope goes in. Obviously have never had a pre '49 engine apart.

Yes it's 91A-6335. If you're engine is a 39 Merc it may have a rope seal . If you need to purchase them , Vanpelt would be a likely source.

Ken,
Thanks again for your info, and your part numbers are spot on. I would be surprised if my '39 Merc already had a rope rear main seal, but we'll see when we open things up!
