Default Engine Rebuild

I had my model A engine rebuilt. It ran slowly for about an hour before I noticed the crank pulley beginning to wable and the front main leaking. The rope seal began to come out. Any ideas what could have caused this?

Poor workmanship! If you have a two piece pulley, or a one piece pulley, it must be loose and the rear part may not be engaged with the key. It would have to be really bad for the seal to come out of place. Someone may have tried to tighten the crank bolt without the pulley in the key, thus breaking the cast pulley. In any case the front cover and pulley need to come off right away to see what went wrong.

We reviewed the various pullys a few years ago. The other item in that area is the slinger that goes on the crankshaft. If it is not there the pully will be too short front to back and the nut will not hold it because it is tightening against the crank shaft not the pully.

I am getting ready to replace the pulley on my wifes roadster, I have removed the rad and as soon as I pick up the socket today I will try to remove it. On her roadster the pulley was also wobbling, appears to be bent and I notice it is a two piece and I am replacing it with a one piece.

any negatives to using a 2 piece pulley over a 1 piece...i know the 2 piece is easier to remove in the car.

Still asking who did you have do the engine, and what did they say?

For what you pay to do an engine today, it should run for more than an hour.

Just to give the other members a smile, I bought my car in 1975 when I was 16, a total rebuild was $750.
