![]() Hi Guy's Way back when I first got my A in 69,,,You were on our "own" as far as working on the old A...I got more bad advice on how to do stuff on the car back then...Such as how to adjust the bearing in the engine.. One guy told me to remove shim's till you could just move the crank by standing on the hand crank......Then start it up...Ya,,,ran for about 1 minute the locked up !!!! Now I know what was the problem ? The crank was probably ground off center as I found out reading here on FordBarn..it had a dull knock no matter what the bearing were adjusted too !! Or here's a real good one,,,This fellow told me to put a magnet in the tranny..I was just a kid back then & I didn't realize the magnet I put in the drain plug was too small...Was Ok till I reved up the engine. Then "BOOM" as the magnet went between the gear's.. Never will forget the bottom half of the tranny case laying on the ground !!!!. Or how about the guy that said the A could do a burn out if you dropped the clutch at a signal... Was great till I broke the pinion gear !!! Aw those were the day's "Young & Stupid " So here's to all the good guy's here on Fordbarn, A big "thank you" for all the correct advice over the year's... God Bless you guy's,,, Greg out West |

You are right Greg. I'm a REAL newbie and I have received so much help and advice from this forum by asking and searching. Heck, nobody even made fun of my whitewall tires that came with the A. Good folks !!

You're right greg.......got my first one in '62 and there was virtually nobody to help
me when I was a 21 year old newbie. To make matters worse, none of my pals my age had any interest in cars from the Model A era. The first time I drove down highway 101 in California I did so with the spark lever all the way up and the GAV wide open. God it was awful with backfiring and smoke all over the place---and no one to tell me what was wrong. I finally got it to a Texaco station and the owner showed me the basic settings. I was amazed at how smooth it ran after that. Jack

Have only been a member of this forum a few weeks, but here is what I know so far: This site is and the quality of folks here willing to help and pass on the knowledge they have is top notch and invaluable. I too would like to personally thank all those who have helped me out so far and let's not forget the site master and moderators. Hat's off to ya.
