Default Drum reinforcing bands

I installed the reinforcing bands on my front drums and I now have a thumping noise when I apply the brakes and of course you can feel it in the peddle.

Did the bands some how take it out of round? I have found a place that will turn the drums but I am afraid this will only increase brake fade as the less metal the faster the heating.

One more thing as I am sitting here at work I may have switch the drums and they are now on opposite sides, would this have an effect?

Thanks
dusty

If you switch drums from side to side you'll know for sure if the 'thump' goes along with the drum.. Your concern about installing those bands is the same as mine regarding cutting and fade, but, I've always felt the drums should be cut after the bands are installed.. I think these steels drums would have to have never been previously cut and everything during the installation would have to come out perfectly, or you would have to be very lucky, for them not to have to be cut..

Thanks, it feels to me that both side are thumping some what, I didn't know if swapping them would have created the problem or not.

I have yet to install a set of bands that did not require me to true the machined surface. The band is nothing more than a rolled piece of channel iron and butt-welded. It was not totally round when it was installed, and as such there is a slight amount of distortion in the drums. Nothing abnormal about this, just true them up on a lathe with a good cutter and a way to keep the harmonics out of the drum during the machining process and you will be good to go.

Wrap a rubber strap tightly around the drum when cutting it..
