I use the nurex wrench to set timieing on 1930 town sedan. After I have found tdc and made two tuns clock wise I stop at the correct position and tighten the cam screw. After tightening I can still run cam almost a quarter turn. Is this normal? Seems like a lot of play.if this isn't normal what should I be looking at?

Is it really 1/4 rotational play? There's supposed to be SOME back and forth play in the distributor shaft, but that seems extreme. Only two things would cause that much slop: worn camshaft oil pump drive gear teeth in the center bearing and/or the drive gear itself. Well, maybe three things: the tang on the bottom of the distributor shaft could be excessively worn and thin. That would allow slop where the tang of the shaft mates with the slot in the drive gear. You'll never get all the play out because it's designed in. 'Looks like you'll be pulling out the distributor at a minimum and probably the valve cover to examine drive gear. The camshaft would have to be removed to check the condition of the teeth. NOT a fun job.

If the tangs of the 2 piece shaft are that worn the driver is also going to be
IMHO. Also the condition of the bushings in the distributor casting.

The best fix I could find for your problem is to just snug the rotor screw so the cam drags on the shaft while setting the timing. This takes the slop out of the equation.
