I need to know where I can get popup pistons for my Merc flathead, I want to run my Evans heads but they are cut out for popups. Can I mill the *#^% of of them to run the dome pistons?

I'd try Arias or Ross, they both make high quality forged pistons for flatheads and can certainly custom make anything you want.
I'd also give H&H Flatheads a call, they manufacture the Navarro parts and he was big into the hi-dome heads for pop-ups. They may sell you the pistons or tell you who they get them from. |

You may be able to use a Ford piston on a 4" crank. This will pust the piston 1/8 out of the cylinder. We've don this before.

Ron's method may also be feasible, but just a "heads-up", you need to be careful about moving the top ring up with this method. It may tend to put the top compression rings at the very edge of the bores. This MAY be real issue on a block that's been "relieved". This could be measured beforehand! (Add) Ross recently incorporated an upgrade (for the Flathead line) on their "metric" ring pack to an improved setup. Still the 1.5, 1.5, 3.0, metric, but different "root" grooving! Thanks, Gary in N.Y. P.S. This type build would be a mandatory block-plate "finish hone" deal! |

From what I have witnessed, a standard Ford piston will come apart at the top land in a pop-up configuration. Now I can't definitely say that's going to happen, but I have seen it twice. I would suggest a Ross piston. Far stronger where it's needed.

I have seen a set of four in a 9N 4cyl engine. Half the top was pop up and the other half was flat. Never have been able to determine what they were, as they definately would be the thing to pep up a 2/9/8N engine.

I used a Ford piston on a merc crank for my Bville engine to get more CR and the rings come nowhere near the top. Counterboring the cylinder head is the tricky part. I have some photos of that operation I can dig up.

Ross does have a line of pop-up pistons. Last time I looked into this, Arias pistons were approx. $100 a slug. That added too much to the build to consider using them. I think the Ross pistons are priced in line with their "normal" pistons. Good luck. |

I have built quite a few of those 8N-9N tractor engines and have seen a few of those pop up pistions. I was always going to check them out on a flathead but never go around to to it. I don't think that pop up will work with a flathead head. Walt

Walt, have you got any idea who made those N pistons, sure would like to get a set. Have wondered if they were another Sherman product, they made a alum HC head for N's.

Probably someone just machined your heads to use ford pistons with a merc crank. Was done a lot and you need to do a little measuring to see what you got. A shame to not be able to use some nice after-market heads. As Ol'Ron said they worked pretty well when set up right.

When I did it, I kept the dome. I did not use a flat top piston. I'll dig up the pics.

The method I used to run the 3 3/4 stroke piston on a 4" crank.
