Default Did you know that Rust in gastank will damage a shutoff valve

If you have rust or dirt in your gastank and install or have a working shutoff valve (new or used). The valve will be damaged when the rust / dirt gets inside the valve and scratches the parts inside.

Damage is done everytime you open / close the valve. Each time more rust gets into the valve it gets harder to turn ... In short order your new shutoff valve will be leaking.

If you install a "fingerfilter" in the inlet of your shutoff valve you can prevent the rust /dirt from damaging the valve.

Here is picture of the "finger filter".

A side note: If you install such a filter be aware that when you drain the gas from the tank that about 2-3 cups of gasoline remains in the tank after the flow stops.

This is due to the fact that the filter raises the inlet about 3/8 inch or so.

Might be a good idea to remove your carpet and floorboards when removing the shutoff valve with the "finger filter" installed.

The first time it happened to me I was not ready when I removed the valve and gas flooded over my hands onto the carpet.

You are so right Benson...Anytime you mix iron rust with brass, the brass always takes a hit since brass is softer than iron!

fine rust particles are insidious.
that is why James Rupert can only warrant his Extreme Leakless water pumps for five years. my first one lasted six years before it started to drip a wee bit.
(still the best pump available IMHO)
