Default Flathead rods right and left why

I made the worst mistake on a motor you can I mixed the rods and caps on my 48 motor. I thought since I was getting the rods resized so what, well after nightmares I decided to go to the machine shop and sort them. I found all the R 1,2,3,4 rods and matched them to the R caps and so on, I am guessing the numbers go together on the rod and cap, but the question came up why are there right and left rods, anyone know? thanks Oh and I read here that the nubers go toward the front of the motor when putting the rods in, what number is that.
