Gettysburg credit card theft.

Did anybody else have an issue with a credit card electronic theft at Gettysburg? I still have my card but someone ,somehow got the info,this was done either at the Appalachian Brewery place or the LongHorn in Hanover.Over $800 were charged to it in Chattanooga Tenn at a Kangaroo gas station. Credit card company knew and shut it off.Just wondering if someone else got it at either of these places or scanned in an elevator or something.

This is for real! Someone can scan all your cards by standing next to you for a minute. Elevator, grocery checkout, all without even taking your cards out of your wallet. Are we ready for the next generation of security? You betcha!

Cards in Europe have built in chips, not magnetic strips. Our vendors and banks don't want to invest in that higher level of security.

On the positive side, for the most part, the company issuing the card is liable in full if you are diligent and notify them of unauthorized use in a timely fashion.

I'm on my 2nd new card in a 1-year period and mine wasn't stolen. My new one has a chip but not as many readers are using them yet. It still has the magnetic strip on the back.

I figure someone is hacking seller accounts and stealing the information for resale. That way they don't go to jail for outright fraud but just for stealing a persons ID. Who ever buys the info is making cards with magnetic strips. Most gas stations in Texas require that a zip code be entered only at the pump reader so if they have enough information they can buy gas. That was all they purchased the last time I got hit. 300 bucks worth in two days before they tried it on an ATM that shut my card account down. They can sometimes get by when ordering on line too. The first time I got hit they got away with one online transaction before they got the red flag. All of mine were transacted in California.

I carry my Card in a shielded cover provided by my bank so it can not be scanned except when it is out of the cover. Ask your bank for one.

My cards (previous two) set underneath of two other cards (not credit cards) with magnetic strips so I know that there is no way mine could have been individually scanned while in my wallet. You have to get the reader pretty close to the magnetic strip to get a scan.

Now for my new card with the chip, it's a different story. Those chips can be scanned up to 25 feet away depending on conditions. A shielded cover is a must for the new chip type cards.

If the chip can be scanned how is the new card better?

With a chip, it depends on how the information is stored on there. The new readers, when and if they ever change to the new systems, will scan the chip for an authorization code at the time of the scan. If you try to store it, then it can't be used as an authorization for a future purchase. It has to be used at the time of the scan for a purchase authorization. I guess the chips are interactive with security measures. You can bet that the criminals will try to figure a way to use the code that's on there though. If it's not one thing you can count on, it's that criminals will always be there hacking away at security measures for their own gain.

My understanding is the new cards with the chips, will not work in the current card readers (as previously stated) so they have to be processed manually (the old fashioned way) a manual print credit card slip and they have to call for authorization. This method became a problem when the carbons were being taken and the number gotten that way. All retailers, etc. will have to get new machines, so that will be awhile and costly! Have you noticed that gas stations offer around 10 cents a gallon less for cash? They save on the credit card fees which can pile up in a hurry for them....LouB.

I haven't seen any gas station in WV. that offer a prize reduction for cash. At least not in my part of the state. Wish they would. That's where I would go.

Where I've seen that, the discount is about 3 cents a gallon. Compare that to the 3% the c.c. companies charge, on $3+/gal gas they are pocketing 2/3 of any savings. Standing in line at the counter to pre-pay with cash (so they'll turn on the pump) and standing in line to settle up isn't worth it to me.

How on earth do you spend $800 at a gas station???? Sounds like someone at the counter was in on it.

I had to get a new card a few months ago as mine was declined at a NAPA store. When I called my bank, they told me someone in Talouse France was buying carpet at the same time someone in Kentucky was buying drugs at a chain store and locked the account. This stuff goes global in seconds. They said most likely someone I did business with was hacked, not my card.
I am a retired IT Director and I stopped logging hack attempts to our servers after they were coming in faster then 1 a second from all over the world. It was just making giant lists that we really couldn't use.

Many equipment contractors have diesel and gasoline tanks on their service trucks, as do farmers.

I had my credit card compromised last year, at a gas station just south of Dawsonville, Ga., when I topped off the '39 CS for the trip home from the Moonshine Festival. Problem was, the credit card company cut off service without notification to me... At the next gas stop, the credit card didn't work! I had to call the credit card company and go through a world of BS, listening to automated promps, before I got a live person on the phone,( who could speak English) it took another 45 minutes before they reactivated my card... Some of these credit card companies, in an attempt to protect themselves , cause more problems for the card holder. I wish there was another way to get around it because, I don't like to carry cash...

The card I used and had comprimised was actually not a credit card but a AAA debit card that I paid into for meals only,it is the modern alternative to Travelors Checks ,I guess,that we used to get at AAA years ago. I ended up only using it twice at the Gettysburg meet. The $800.00 spent on gas was in about a dozen separate gas fillups or cigaretts or whatever at the same staion,supposedly the original theifs sell the card number and many different buyers jump on this,all guilty of theft in my opinion. Pretty much narrowed it down to the Appalachian Brewery as another Barner PM'd me of a similar incident at the same restaurant. The card company issued me a new card and is in the process of reimbursement but surprisingly they do not seem interested in following up on the theft information,evidently they pay up and write it off as a loss on taxes. Gave them the location and fact it happened to someone else. I didn't like that restaurant and waiter from the gitgo,mayby I will notify the company headquarters.

Cecil & TDO, perhaps your area doesn't have the gas taxes like we do here in Taxachusetts. The difference here between cash and credit card in "some", not all
stations are as much as 10 cents per gallon!
