Hello Anyone, I need help with a Borg Watner O/D, installed in a 31 woody. My trans has the push/pull cable and a button on the shift lever. The trans has worked great until now. The trans is apparently stuck in O/D the car will not go into reverse.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Call 256-310-6463 or email [email protected] Thanks |

Sounds like the solenoid has failed or is stuck. Try disconnecting any power to the solenoid to see if it will release. Ron Mosher has parts for these or he did a few years ago. He is in Newhall, CA 661-255-1931. He should be able to give you some advice on the workings.

Check that the pull cable attached to the gear box lever has not slipped in the set screw. You should be able to position the lever at either stop with the pull handle. One stop is out of overdive, the other stop engages the free wheeling. You have to have the lever up against the stop to be in either function. When you are in free wheeling you cannot back up. Also check the oil level in the case. Operate the switch and listen for solenoid clicking in and out.

The 49 to early 51 Mercury transmissions had all sorts of safety systems built in to keep problems like this from happening but these are discarded when they are put into custom applications. The Mercs had a reverse lock actuating system built in to lock the OD out both mechanically and electricaly on the early ones. The mechanicals did the same function as the cable pull does except it was only for reverse. The solenoids don't really have a habit of hanging up but I'll never say never on that since springs and pawls can break or wear out.
Definitely check the cable pull as Tom Endy mentioned. Kerby |
