I have an NOS trunk handle and NOS lock tumbler, but when the lock assy is in the handle, it won’t lock it. It appears that I’m missing a piece. In the photo looking down the handle where the tumbler goes, there are two parallel raised guides and what appears to be a spring loaded detent. It seems that I’m missing a piece that slides along those guides and is moved in and out of a slot in the treaded handle base, when the key is turned, thus locking the handle from turning. Does anyone know what that missing piece looks like, and can maybe furnish a picture? Thanks

I believe the small offset pin at the rear of the lock cylinder pushes against two raised areas to extend and retract a lock bolt. If you remove the bottom collar can you see the lock bolt that extends and retracts? It is possible it is not in place.

On my ‘46 Coupe, when the handle is “locked”, it will turn 1/4 turn counter clockwise but will not release the latch. When it is “unlocked” the handle is engaged and will release the latch when turned. When I first got my car, I thought there was something wrong, because the handle would move when it was “locked”.

I Have just fitted an NOS Barrel into a used but good handle, I am still trying to figure out how it works .
You turn the key one way, then the other way and sometimes it locks, almost as if it has a mind of it's own when it wants to lock or not. Grrrrrrrrr Bill |

To close and latch the lid, I turn the handle to the "release" position, gently lower the lid, push down on the assembly where the license plate light is to close the lid tight, then release the handle. Turn the key 180 deg. CCW to lock. |

Here’s the photo of the base of my NOS handle, showing the slot where the dead bolt would slide thru to lock the handle. I’m definitely missing a part that functions as a deadbolt. I would love to have a picture of the proper part; I assume that I could fairly easily fab something. If someone has something, please post or send.
Thanks |

Can't get a great picture of the spare handle I have but is the part where the lock cylinder engages different than yours? Is your lock cylinder all the way in? There are two round holes the detents pop up into. I know I fought that on my 42 but eventually got everything working. |

I have definitely pushed the tumbler all the way in, with the pins in the retaining holes. Still no locking action. I have been chasing this issue for a while, and have seen a couple different styles or suppliers of handles (not counting a few repro versions). Mine is definitely a genuine NOS version, with the p/n on the underside, along with a mfg logo. I’m guessing I can fab something on my milling machine ( wish I wasn’t a novice with it), but some dimensions and an idea of what kind of recess or slot is used for the rotating end of the tumbler assy to fit into would help. Thanks to all who have replied.

Hi 51 Woodie
Well the way you lock your handle sounds a lot like mine, maybe that's just the way it is and accept it, just seemed strange to me Thank you Bill |

Yes your missing the lock bolt. I have made the lock bolt, for earlier handles, from key stock. I do not have a picture of the later lock bolt. The early style is just the square stock of the proper length with a recess on one face for the lock cylinder pin to fit into. When the key is rotated to lock the pin pushes the bolt out and when rotated to unlock the pin retracts the bolt.

Well, I found a junk handle that was a different style than mine, but after drilling out the tumbler, I found what looks a lot like my innards. Hopefully, the lock bolt in the picture is the same as what I need. Thanks for everyone’s comments.
