It is interesting to me that the video says that vanadium increases fatigue resistance. The Model T crankshafts are failing due to fatigue. I guess 100 years of bending is testing the vanadium steel.
It took a while for metalists to understand how to prevent fatigue failure.

Lengthy but well worth the watch.

Research of information from the Henry Ford and other Ford books & information leads to one of Henry's long time friends and employee Childe Harold Wills. He had a background in metallurgy with a lot of patents to go along with his history. His mix of Chrome Vanadium Steel was one of his patented developments. Ford Motor company had a fair amount of parts they made from C Harold Wills' alloy. Henry and Mr Wills' friendship soured after a time due to his constant pushing for the use of his patents. During the late teens Henry bought out the majority of his share holders to include Mr Wills so they went their separate ways. Mr Wills had an interesting history after that. His Wills St Claire cars were innovative but too expensive for most people.

I was always amazed that a T crank would last at all.
