Good day to all, new to restoration with low level mechanical skill level. Recently acquired a 1937 Ford 1/2 ton that is in need of love, minor issue; the driver's side outdoor handle with not open the door, makes a sound but does not operate, thoughts? BTW, the inside door handle does work.

Could be the remote .When the inside handle is attached and lifted up it locks from the inside. There is a spring on the remote. It could be broken. Here is a pic and with the dog leg looking spring .The vendors have the spring .

Also the rod that goes from the handle to the latch may have come loose.

Here is a pic of a 36 coupe latch and rod. Rod lengths and forms vary from the application. Check where it is riveted to the remote and latch. Did you move the handle in the different positions on the remote shaft? In re reading your initial post -the door latch spring might be broken.I suggest you remove the entire latch assy.In that case sometimes the entire window has to come out.
Again thinking about your issue. It might be the mechanism that the square shank of the handle goes through in the latch itself.Does the handle spin or is it blocked? Last edited by deuce lover; 06-17-2025 at 06:53 AM. |

Ty for the follow up info, the handle does not spin and no glass in the doors. The window regulator has been removed and the remote spring is in place. When turning the handle, it make a clunking sound like it's trying to work, but does not?

You need to remove the latch and determine the problem. Its easier to do that on the bench.Does the striker have spring tension? A pic of the spring side when removed please
Here is an example of a 36 4dr rear latch.Yours might have some similarities. The square handle shank goes thru that square hole and works a mechanism.Yours could be worn or damaged in there. Last edited by deuce lover; 06-18-2025 at 09:11 AM. |

Is there a 'trick' for the removal? I have a 41 pu, which came to me with all the screws removed, and all of the latch parts need to come out for repair or replacement. I haven't figured out how to get the parts out.
