How do I tell the difference between the stock water pump and the leakless type ?

The shaft will not move in & out on a leakless pump, but it will on a stock pump.

When a leakless water pump starts to leak (and it will, been there, done that) there is nothing you can do but rebuild the pump. Hard to do on the side of a road. When a regular water pump starts to leak, you can add a split ring of packing or two and be on your way in no time. Easy to do on the side of a road.

when I build a leakless pump, I use the Snyder`s rear bushing with the two-lip seals in the rear. I then install the original style packing under the packing nut. if it starts leaking just tighten the nut up and you are back on the road.

I have the same pump jw, and it works well. One needs to back out the packing nut before adding grease to keep from pushing it into the head. I have never had a standard pump on my car, it had one when I got the car so I don’t know if the same thing needs to be done on a standard water pump.

There are a lot of variation in the modifications made to make a so called leakless pump.
Taking it apart is probably the only way that is not somewhat of a guess. Some stock pumps have had a collar installed to prevent movement. Some modified to be in the class of leakless can have the shaft move in-out. Personally I like the leaks less and less of a stock pump as everything beds in, a few adjustments in the first year then it becomes every several years. |
