Hi, I’m looking for an oil dipstick for a 1950 Mercury Flathead engine with a rear sump oil pan. A Ford dipstick will not work as it’s shorter, 18 1/2 in. Whereas I need the Mercury dipstick which is 19 5/8 in. I’ve looked everywhere on the internet plus made many phone calls and i am running out of options. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it's any help, the dipsticks for 55-57 Tbird and Yblock trucks were long. I know it will not be marked correctly, but you can remark it yourself. Option if you call does not come up with something. Not sure if the little cap on the top will fit the tube though. The TBird ones are available aftermarket from the TBird part suppliers.

Thanks for the information but the Mercury Flathead dipstick tube is rather large and will not support those dipsticks.

Can you cut the Mercury tube shorter and use the dipstick available? Or weld and extension on to the shorter stick . The thread is 1/2-20 if I remember correct.

I'm sure you can use any flathead dipstick that is long enough to get wet. So measure the length that the dipstick tube extends from that casting. Add 4 7/8" to that length and mark that as "FULL" now put a smaller mark 5/8" below it. The smaller mark is "ONE QUART LOW", this allows you to easily calculate how much to add when topping up. Just to make this clear the oil level when measured at the 45 degree angle of the dipstick tube, is 4 7/8" below where the dipstick tube enters the casting. I bought two 1950 Ford flathead dipsticks, I’m going to cut them both and weld a 1 5/8 to one, that’ll make one 19 1/2 inches . Which is the length I need. Thanks.

Willie: Here's some helpful info. on the OEM genuine Merc. dipstick that came with my 1949-50 Merc. rear sump oil pan. Correct OEM measurements are shown. Dipstick has the letter "M" stamped on it.
