Default Top Batting

I am in the process of installing a new top on my 31 Tudor and would like to know what the approximate thickness of the batting material should be. The kit I bought was supplied with a 1/8" thick sheet of felt which I plan on not using. I plan on using a poly hi-loft type batting.

If the batting is too thick the top will have a cartoonish puffy look. Maybe 2 layers of felt might suit your job.

IMO, if you use the poly for batting, then put whatever thickness you wish because it never does look authentic. This is because of the compressibility. The top pressure is more around the nailed perimeter ...and not as much in the middle. The poly will make it look puffy in the center.

If you want it to look 'more correct', then use something such as Warm & Natural brand Cotton Batting. This is likely available at your local WalMart, sewing center, or online. Fold it to make two thicknesses, and tear/shred the edges.
