early transmission

I have an early trans in my pile, it will give up some nice parts.
My question is ,this trans has the two thrust washers on the cluster gear,I think the later trans dont have these,
Is the difference in the case or the gear compared to a later one
can the case be used with the later gears and can the cluster gear go in a later case
