Default Chassis Black

Does anyone have a correct chassis black for the Model A.

At one time you could buy premixed Chassis black. Now there's all kinds of names for Satin Black at all different levels of gloss, but what one is correct.

Heck at one time "Rad Shops" bought by the 5 gallon drum.

You can't buy it in Canada.

Original was a lacquer for speedy production. To match the gloss from my original frame I've used two coats of epoxy black primer (protection) then top coat with two coats of PPG DDL black lacquer (correct gloss).

Works for me, your mileage will vary.

Available in gloss, satin or flat. Several brands available. I've used satin.

According to the M-Specs and what I have read in the Paint & Refinish Guide, the frame was originally sprayed with Japanning Black, - bituminous tar-based product called Gilsonite that was mixed with Turpentine and Linseed Oils. Afterward the frame assembly was baked onto the metal in steam ovens. Once the tar coating had cured, and after partial assembly, any scratches or scrapes that occured during that process were sprayed with Black Pyroxylin to coat these areas.

Depending on how realistic you are after, we will typically use Black Paint code 95100 which is a Toyota color and then flatten it using at topcoat of PPG SU4985 Matting Agent in anywhere depending on 25% to 40%. If we are looking for a more textured surface, we substitute the reducers for an economical lacquer thinner with about 25% flattener and fog it on.

FWIW, he JSC has specified that the Frame must be Black, -and not rubbed out. No specification regarding the texture or finish ...just as long as it is not polished.

This frame, that is under my Victoria, was painted with POR-15 Chassis Black using a brush. The Chassis Black will dull when exposed to direct and incident ultraviolet light from our Sun. However, you can top coat it with a gloss black enamel. I believe that the original chassis had a Japanned finish, that is, it was dipped in black enamel. I did not overcoat my chassis and since I painted it with POR-15 in 2014, it is still glossy.
