Cherry Picker Engine Hoist

I bought a Laron brand engine hoist at the local Farm & Fleet June of '23. It looks like almost everybody's "cherry pickers". I used it once at time of purchase, and wheeled it in the corner. Now I'm using it for an engine swap and I am bummed by how fast it LEAKS DOWN. I may not need to use it again for a bit, but I like quality tools, does anyone have a recommendation for a quality 2 ton hyd ram? I have seen on (forgive me, U tube) that ther're may be one that uses pneumatic pressure for height adjustmant, just asking for any info.......... Thanks guys!

Hydraulic cylinders are very cheap to rebuild, and very easy too. Watch a couple videos and get on it. It could also be the valve, not likely with how much use they get.

Maybe it's just been sitting to long and the valve may be stuck. Before I did anything drastic, I'd put a decent load on it and raise and then lower it every day I went to my shop. It probably won't do much, but the cost is nil.

I rebuilt the cylinders on the aerial boom trucks at the phone company. It's an easy job except for getting the end of the cylinder unscrewed if you don't have the correct spanner wrench. We had a complete set of spanner wrenches at work which was really nice. A large pipe wrench will work but it kind up marks up the sides of the cap. If you take it apart and take the pieces to a cylinder rebuilder, they will match up the seals for you and then you can put it back together. Make sure the seals are facing the correct position when you slip them back on. Take a picture of them so you will remember which way the sealing lips face on the seals. Take the piston and cylinder with you so they can measure them to get the correct seals. They shouldn't charge very much for the seals if you take it apart and reassemble it.

Tractor supply or equivalent should have the rams, I rebuilt the loader rams on my Ford 8n it was easier than I thought it would be.

When mine was brand new a few years ago, it did the same thing. Brand new, it was low on hydraulic fluid. Topped it off, bled it by jacking it all the way up and down, and it was good.

Our local hydraulic repair been in business for many years refused to work on my walker floor jack. Said wasn't enough money in it. They now only work on big equipment. Hard to find good help anymore. Looks like everything is a DIY.

If you unscrew the release valve, there is a steel ball inside. if its rusty, some hardware stores carry ball bearings. If its in good shape, sometimes a direct hit with a punch will re seat the surface of the brass seat it seals on.

Almost always there is some dirt trapped in the release valve. Like cas3 says, have a look at the valve, then flush the cylinder and refill.

I agree...... when I have the luxury of digging into this, after completing my engine swap, I wil report on my success with digging into the valve on my hoist. Thanks.

If its that new, it must be a simple problem. Moisture, dirt or air could make the ball in the relief valve get goofy. I would get the rod extended, then remove the valve screw, then pull the cylinder down and blow out the valve area. It will be messy, but worth a try.

I've had several thru my life that just can't be fixed for some unknown reason, but still worth a try
