Bought the book soon after publication and found it to be quite good as far as it went, showing an impressive collection of racing parts and applications that apply to boats and midgets. For me, a guy who wants to use a near stock 60 for street use, the information was more off subject and leaves me looking elsewhere for answers. Seems that the body of experience for improved street use is to be found here and there. Hope that the world supply of replacement parts allows getting good use out of my little engine. Good Luck: Fred A

I believe his name is Willim. If you Google 'Richard Willim' or maybe 'The little V8 60 Power Powerhouse' it should get you to his website where you can order his book and get his contact information. His book may talk a lot about performance enhancement but it's probably still the best book published on the little 60 HP. Even if I was building an original show car with a little 60 HP engine, I would want to improve performance internal to the engine where it would not be visible for judging. Rich also builds stock engines, so if you call or email him directly, he can tell you anything you may need to know about the little 60.

look for the ford reference book (owners manual) for 1937 with the V860 on cover. it isn't the best but it has a lot of good info on the 60, like specs, wiring diagram, etc.. it is small 4"x6" or so and is 64 pages. pm me if you want a picture of it.

Here it is:
http://www.willimvintageengines.com/ Lots of history and neat stuff, but not really oriented to how-to-fixxit. As you probably noticed, Ford never published very much about these engine and real tech is scarce. |

There is also some info on the little 60 in the EFV8C/A '37 Ford book and Maybe something in the '38-'39 book. If I were restoring a Ford vehicle that was originally built with a 60 HP engine, I would keep that 60 and make any internal improvements I could to increase HP. That setup will get you anywhere you want to go as fast as you need to go. Those little 60 HP vehicles attract a lot of attention at shows.

I don't think that tech for the 60 is that scarce. Early MOTORS books have enough fairly nice specs for the money, but the real ideal would be a JWL "Flathead Facts" for the 60. It is doubtful that there is anyone out there with the analytical history that Mr Lawson brought to that work. Me, I just want to know If there is any real improvement in using three bolt carbs from the big brother flatheads on the original manifold, perhaps opened up a bit.. or if the 11A spark advance has any advantage with 87 octane fuel. Even a source of exhaust headers that fit between Model A rails, or is it another waste of time and money. I ask these questions on the hamb and get a blank. It's tough out there for the little guys. Good Luck: Fred A

Should be intersting to find out...a '41 distributor or its advance will go right in, and of course the crab can be readily adapted and has that too. Generally, the early curves assume the availabbility of really bad gasoline and drivers that lugged in too high a gear, so more rapid advance tends to be helpful on modern gas and decent driving...though probably the 60 has to lug a bit with only a 3 speed.
On the carb...something I noticed recently is the end of the dyno curve published in the early service bulletins: On the 60, the curve is still RISING at the point they cut the chart off, whereas on bigger stockers it is DROPPING at the end of the curve and they have obviously gone past peak. So...it looks like 60 even stock has better breathing, AND that they could have picked a bigger number than 60 off of their own test had they chosen a wider sheet of graph paper...?? |

The Early Ford V8 Club has a book on engines and there is some V8-60 info in it.
