Default 48 Ford Fan

Had an intermittent noise coming from the front of my engine. I examined the fan and I had noticeable side to side float on the shaft.. I know these run in a bush is it normal to have any such float in the fan? I suspect if there is, it is too much.

Thanks

GB

The 21A fan doesn't have a bushing. It's metal to metal with a small oil reservoir built in. There is a procedure to service it with motor oil. Any worn out parts are available in reproduction from parts sources.

ABNot sure what would be making the noise, unless the fan shaft/housing is worn to the point where the blades are hitting something. I would think the belt tension would keep the fan from moving laterally. Here is some parts and maintenance info. The lube oil is up for discussion in the old Ford world, so I use standard 15/40 in my '46 59AB fan, and so far, no issues.

procedure involves turning hub 90 degrees and let excess run out-then replace fill plug and you're good. right. ? Newc

Newc. As described in the service manual, (see picture) position fan hub so fill screw is on top, remove screw, add 1oz. of oil, turn fan to place fill hole at bottom to allow excess oil to drain then install fill plug. There is a “stand tube” inside the hub that allows excess oil to drain, so the oil is at the correct level. Not sure what the correct seal/gasket is supposed to be on the screw, but I use an Oring.
