Default 53 Mercury 4bbl air cleaner

What is the diameter of the opening that fits over the carb on a stock 53 4bbl air cleaner? Thanks. Reply to [email protected] please.

I believe the stock 4bbl option was a Holley 2140.

The 4 bbl was first used on the Mercury's, on the 54' "Y" block.

Respectfully, it is 5 1/8". Ford products never used the 4 3/4" neck on any carburetor, other than the '56 Mercury with a Carter WCFB four barrel and the '57 LIncoln with the same Carter. GM and Chrysler did though.

In '53 Mercury used a 1901 Holley 2 barrel teapot with a 5 1/8" neck.
In '54 Mercury used a 2140 4 barrel teapot also with a 5 1/8"neck.

In '54 the 2140 wasn't optional. It was the only carb offered in all US built Mercruy's.

If the O/P is actually referring to a 4 BBL on a '53 Mercury, it has to be an aftermarket setup. The old 4 BBL manifolds took the old "square" pattern carburetors. These were made by Holley, Carter, Rochester, and even Stromberg. I just measured a small-base 4G and it is 4 1/8". I have a Stromberg "Aeroquad" I can measure later if anyone cares.

I measured the opening, in the bottom of the stock, 53' Mercury air cleaner, with the stock 1901 Holley 2 barrel teapot, and it is 4 3/4". The outer frame opening, for the carburetor, is
5 5/8"

Yes, I was referring to the mounting surface on the carb, and not the air cleaner. My mistake. I just measured a '53 Merc 1901 that I have for parts, and it's 5 1/8" diameter the the center of the air cleaner gasket surface on the carb.
