The main question is about the front seal on the crank shaft. it's a one piece seal slide on type has a small hole on one side. I assume the hole faces toward the engine. Second question. The seal appears to be set into the block and pan with some type of silicone in both the block and pan area. There are no rope type seals in the front, just the rear of the pan. Any ideas what type of sealer to use. Second question: Do you use Permatex #2 on both sides of the pan rail gaskets. Thanks in advance for all replies.

When I built my last engine, I had one of those one-piece seals in hand. When I realized what was need to use it, I tossed it and went back to a traditional rope seal. No leaks so far.

As far as the pan gasket goes, I use Hylomar Blue, it's a non setting sealant. Permatex 2 sounds similar. Just a light coating on the pan rail, put the gaskets on, then a light coating on gaskets and put the pan on. Don't over tighten the pan bolts.

This one has been on my engine for several years and never leaked a drop. What was needed to use it? Just curious as I never had any problems with it. Thanks for your quick reply.

Could you be more specific about your problem with using the one piece seal? What was needed to use it? Thanks, John.

This was a long time ago, but as I remember, the one I had didn't fit neatly into the space provided; the instructions said to fill it with silicone sealer for support. That didn't seem right, so I went with the conventional seal and haven't regretted it. It also needed something called a "Redi-Sleeve". It didn't come with the seal. The whole deal seemed kind of shoddy to me. I do not know if the current setups are improved or not. Initially, it seemed like a good idea.
