For our new 12x stronger flywheel housing to pass fine point judging, does anyone know the part number or size of the cotter pin at the bottom of the flywheel housing that jiggles to keep the hole open.
I believe that it is an unpainted 7/32 x 1 inch plain steel cotter pin without an extended leg. Thanks for any comments. |

Bert's catalog lists the cotter pin as part A-6399 but not found in Big Green Bible.

Benson, Thanks for your reply..
Retail parts dealers invent part numbers. The Ford "Standard Parts" number for cotter pins should be A-235XX. I'm looking for digits that replace the XX. |

Terry, my Archive Study Notes show it as a A-23575 but I have a question mark after it. That likely means the number was superseded but I could not confirm. The MAFFI database does not show that number however because I do have that number, it likely means I saw it on a drawing when I was looking at other prints and just wrote it down to look at later. Sorry I cannot be of more help. Like I'm sure you did also, I did try to look in Mick's book and at several random PPL but did not see any mention of that number or part. Is it not mentioned in the A-6395 assembly drawing??

I looked at the A-6395 print online and the pin is not there. I have a part number of 72038-S for the pin when used in the Model B housing. Same pin? Probably? |

Alexiskai, WOW, you found the needle in a haystack. MAFFI has no record of that part number and it's not worth the effort to search the UK archives even if they exist. Thanks to those who replied online and by private messaging to comment on my measurements. My Machinery's Handbooks from the 1920s show cotter pins with equal-length legs, so we will supply a cotter pin that will be or can be modified to be 7/32 x 1-inch long bare steel with a symmetrical head and equal-length legs. |

HelloTerry--I agree that a 7/32" X 1" cotter is the proper part to supply with your new housings. Thank you so much for caring about authenticity!
As an aside, 3/16" X1" cotters are supplied by some vendors, probably because they could not find 7/32" ones. |

Ford wouldn't have used an A prefix slash basic part number for a cotter pin, so don't try fussing going down that rabbit hole.
All hardware listed in the Ford Master Parts catalogs will be a five digit number with a suffix indicating what the finish is to be. This is from a former Ford Parts Manager. Me ![]() Just thinking out loud here, on the assy. line more than likely they would have grabbed a cotter pin regardless whether it had uneven legs whatever, they wouldn't have held up production because a specified pin that has no real value other than keeping a hole clean, wasn't readily available. |

Jeff, that makes total sense, and I would agree with you 110% ...IF I didn't know better. Ford assigned a part number for every item used in the Model-A assembly. This included upholstery thread, wire, a fastener, fluid, etc. All of these used either an A or T prefix. Here is a fairly complete listing of Cotters found in the July 1931 PPL.
