Default generator

I have a 53 customline with a 6 volt generator. I bought another rebuilt one to have a spare just incase. On the back of mine I have a piece that looks like a condenser with a wire that goes to one of the posts. the new one I bought doesn't have that. Do I take it off the old one and put in on the new one?
I hope its not a dumb question. Thanks

That is probably a static suppressor for the radio, since generators make a lot of high frequency noise, and the capacitor/condenser will pass the high frequency to ground instead of broadcasting it from all of the hot wires in the car. You should put it on the new generator.

Like this one on the left in my '51? My car is very original and this was on it when I got it.

Yes you would take it off the old generator and put it on the new, or you could leave it off and see how much it effects your radio. Capacitors do go bad and it could effect charging if it is bad.
