Default Zipper 6V-12V

Considering buying the Zipper dist. and installing it this down-season. I want to leave the option open to go to 12V at some point. If I install the 6v Zipper kit....the only part that is actually voltage and polarity sensitive is the coil...RIGHT? Does anyone see any reason why I could not simply change the 6v coil for a 12V version and reverse the polarity if and when I go to 12V?

The ignitor modules are 6 volt positive ground or 12 volt negative ground.

With most electronics changing voltage or reversing the polarity will destroy the module.

This will likely be covered in the Installation Manual.

About changing coils, Installation manual says:

"Minimum primary resistance of the coil must be 1.3 to 1.5 OHM. A lower primary
resistance will provide too much current to the Ignitor, causing it to burn out and VOID THE WARRANTY."

You also have the bulbs, and horn that need changed in addition to modern bendix on the starter. Send me an email to jrelliott42@gmail. com and will send you a list of bulbs and other electrical info. The existing cutout can be used on the existing generator, just change the battery to 12V and re polarize the generator, and switch the ammeter and battery wiring.

Related info:

Unlike stock model A GENERATOR (WHICH ALLOWS changing polarity and voltage) Most alternators are also voltage and polarity dependent. Wrong voltage or polarity will damage the unit.

There is one alternator I have seen which has a "strap" on the back which allows changing pos to neg polarity.

Use the 6V battery cables and the stock starter motor, but change the Bendix to a modern starter drive made in the USA. If you use a negative ground, reverse the hookup to the Ammeter.

You can add a resistor to the coil wire (50s & 60s Chevy part). But you'll need to change the module in the distributor to a 12V one.
From the FS site:
Spare modules available on proper plate $71.00
