Default Water Pump and Fa. Inspection

Yes the thread name is wrong, it was supposed to say "Fan" and not "Fa."

Since I have to remove the water pump to get the head resurfaced, I thought that I'd take a look at it. Not sure if I have the leakless type or not. Is there a way to tell?

I also noticed a few things. The fan pulley does not spin true. Not sure if this is an issue. Video below:

There is also some forward and aft play in the water pump. I'd say it's no more than 1/16 of an inch. Video below:

Unscrew the packing gland nut. If there is packing in there it is not the leak less kind. From the photo it looks like an original.

1/16 play is fine. Normally the end of the shaft rides on a boss in the head that limits travel.

Consider taking the pump apart to restore it. It looks like it may not need much. In any case, find some water pump grease for the rear bearing and some normal grease for the front bearing. Except if it is a leak less variety it may have sealed bearings.

That has an old leakless type packing nut on it.Not original, but they were sold for years. It has a seal in the front of it that you can pop out and change. It may have other mods as well,as the nut is run too far back to tighten if using standard packing.

Good to know. I greased this pump twice since fixing the car and it does accept grease. Should I keep greasing it?

I also was thinking of replacing the fan with a more authentic two blade fan. It would help to know if the fan pulley being out of round is an issue.

I can only see a couple seconds of that video before it kicks off. But,from what I can see,it looks like the whole assembly is off center, not just a bent pully.I kind of strongly feel that when it was assembled the key rode up a little, and the hub is not seated correctly on the shaft.Very easy to do.I've had a lot of practice putting them together and having the key slide up.However,I can generally feel it when tightening the nut on the shaft, when it should stop turning and it won't come up against a positive stop,I know that it isn't seated correctly. That packing nut doesn't mean you have a leakless pump,it only means somebody put that band aid on in the past.DO not overgrease the pump, all the extra goes into the radiator and plugs things up.

That’s true for the rear bearing, but not the front. If you overlube the front bearing/bushing the excess pushes out the front, onto the inside of the fan pulley, and then is flung all over the engine compartment. Sad voice of experience speaking…

It will also have a neoprene “O” ring between the packing nut and housing.(as seen in the pic). This O ring could have deteriorated and needs replacing which could be a source of your leak. As far as end play…..it should be checked between the boss in the head and the impeller shaft, not the fan and the housing. 1/16” as stated above, is fine.

Trying to find a new 2 blade fan is almost impossible. Nobody has new fans. Not sure why
they can't get them.

I believe Snyder's had them made. They do a run, distribute to the dealers, and then everyone sells out. I bought two a couple of years ago from Bert's when they were available.

Well, here's a business opportunity for you! Start manufacturing fans and you will have the market to yourself!

They are making new fans - but they had to do a retooling. Initial date for new fans was supposed to be mid-october (now) but that shifted to November.

One of my buddies from my club has a half dozen original fans - all in good shape. I'm tempted to put one of them on my car

I wouldn't trust an original fan you cannot see the metal fatigue until it actually breaks!!!
