Packing a leaking 1929 Model A Ford water pump. Ok good folks here is what I did: 1. Water pump is leaking. Packing nut tightened as much as it would take. 2. Raised the left hood. 3. Cleaned the fan shaft thoroughly. 4. Lubricated the fan shaft. (water pumps grease). 5. Taking a tool gently unscrewed the packing nut counter clockwise. 6. When I could see it had cleared the threads, I took a small wooden dowel and gently tapped it to move the packing nut away from the threads as I could not move it. 7. Some water will escape during all of the procedure. 8. Thoroughly cleaned and lubricated the newly exposed fan shaft. 9. Put some grease on the 2(two new water pump packing’s). 10. As the 2 packing’s were slit at 45 degrees (which is a very good thing), pushed both of them into the packing nut with one slit on the top and one slit on the bottom. Went in well. Did not try to remove any old packing. Made sure the packing’s were flush with the end of the packing nut. 11. Going to the carburetor side of the car took an appropriate size of a larger wooden dowel, to apply just a small amount of pressure on the packing nut so I could turn it clockwise and engage the threads. Very, very little pressure was needed. I simply could not get the packing nut to restart on the threads without a little applied pressure. 12. Tightened the packing nut till it stopped. Cranked the car and the nut turned just a hair more as you tighten the packing nut when the car is running(watch the fan!!). Not a drop of water is leaking. 13. YEEEAAAAA!! Yes I will check it daily. |
