Have posted in the Wanted section with no luck so thought I’d make a post here. Looking for a pair (or single) NOS 1942 Mercury “29A” heads.
If Mercury had the 29A heads, what came on the 1942 Ford? Was there a 29T head?

29A heads aren't common today and are somewhat rare. Some of that stuff was made during the war for vehicles like the T16 carrier. Larger trucks were also made for wartime production but most were 6-cylinder types. Fire trucks were in production by several sources but I'm not sure if any had the 29A heads. The 99T head was for trucks and they continued casting those through 1941 and possibly 42. The 29A head was for all production from 1942 through 1944. The 59A stuff came in just before the war was over but the blocks changed for the 59 series engines. The one exception was the 221 replacement blocks of 41A prefix. They made 41T heads for 221 truck replacement blocks. The regular production 221 engines just used the 81A heads through the end of 1942 production. After the war, Ford supplied kits to modify the earlier 81A heads to work on the post war blocks due to the new valve angles. All they were for was to open up the valve relief area in the heads to work with the new angle.

Out of curiosity, I just looked through each parts book I have that covers 1942 and find no listing for such a thing.
What gives?

![]() What's the difference to an earlier head? Is it the offset for the valves?

I saw a 34 5 window at a car show here recently with an obvious 37-48 replacement engine in it. The owner's father bought it in 1953 as I recall. Had the 29A heads. I had never seen them before so I'm guessing pretty rare.

I’ve been by his place a bunch lately…….always feels like something’s missing……driving by, not stopping in to talk Flatheads with him……..Mark
