Default Timing vs overheating

If timing is a contributor to overheating, does it need more advance or less…?

I believe you want to retard it (less advance) to cool it down but hopefully someone will confirm because I have the same question. So, bump!

Typically retarded timing is a contributor to excess heating. Advancing ignition timing to proper spec or in some cases slightly more can help. However, it's more often cooling system related, and in most cases the radiator.

retarded timing causes more heat.

Yes, retarded timing is not good. It should be checked as it is a very common cause of overheating.

This was described to me by an old tractor mechanic. If it's firing late, the ball of fire has a chance to expand as the piston goes down. Big fire/more heat.

Also, late timing decreases engine speed so fuel is increased to compensate. More fuel, more heat.

GB's got it, retarded timing has more cylinder exposed to absorb heat
