Default 330 vs 340 Cam

On a pretty stock engine, using stock intake and carb, which is the better cam? Are 330's available new anywhere? Using a Burtz cam on a stock engine detrimental to performance/mileage?

Use the Burtz cam with a high compression head and don't look back. Your performance and gas mileage with improve.

The 330 cam would be the better choice with stock engine and carb in my opinion. I feel you would see no improvement between the two until you changed the head to a higher comp, and improved the intake system. My 29 Tudor has a 330 cam and a snyder 5.5 head, and stock intake, including a zenith carb. It pulls up any hill in the area in top gear, doesn't over heat and still sounds like an A. I don't have any data to back my opinion up, so that is all it is, an opinion.

Without choosing sides on this, my opinion is based on personally using both of Stipe's IB330 and his IB340 camshafts in otherwise same spec-ed engines. IMHO, the IB330 is a better 'torque' producing camshaft whereas the 340 was more of a mid-range power producer. My personal feedback is that I prefer having torque over power as the driveability seems much more inline with how the original drivetrain of a Model-A was manufactured. It is torque that is your friend with a stock ratioed transmission and a high(er)-speed rear axle ratio (-or overdrive transmission). If you are someone who has a close-ratio 5 speed transmission where the RPM band is tighter between the gears, likely the 340 is better suited.

As far as availability of 330" lift camshafts, Kevin Prus has his new A camshaft enroute as we speak and should be available for purchase within the next 2-3 weeks.

Where is the Burtz cam relative to the Stipe cams on the torque/HP spectrum?

somewhere there is a graph of the torque curve. The 340 starts quite a bit higher.

More duration = less bottom end.
