Default side boards on the Model A pickup?

Just about everyone asks why I don't put side boards on my 29ccpu, but the truth is......I like the looks of it better without them.

I've studied a lot of available recent photos of Model A pickup trucks, and I'd say 3 out of 4 have side boards.

I also don't like the looks of those step plates on the running boards, things on the radiator cap, rock shields, and just about anything that didn't come from the factory.

(note: Someone in the past put on those rear bumpers, and although I wouldn't bother to add them, those will stay.)

So.....what do you prefer?

For practical reasons, I have a toneau (sp?) cover on mine. Everything we carry on rallies is out of sight and out of the weather

Ha,ha......If I had something other than a pickup, I might be interested in a lot of add-on stuff....but the pick-up was for the working man, and he couldn't afford much. Shoes for the kids came first!

IMO, in these affluent times we add too much bling to our cars, often the same stuff as everybody else in an effort to individualise our cars. Self defeating.

For a pickup, I have to agree with eccentric . I reallly like the understated beauty and simplicity of a truck's appearance without all the bling. No reason to put side boards on. Cars - sure, bling them up! But too each his own. They are all beauties.

Oops, my mistake.......didn't realize I punched the wrong key......it's a '28. Prolly doesn't make much difference, but it does have the red steering wheel. Being a newbie with model A's, I'm not sure what else separated the two years, besides the steering wheel!

So, while we're at it, what are the differences between a '28 and '29 pickup truck?

As stated above, I'm aware of the red steering wheel on the '28....and, I believe the very early 28's had the emergency brake on the left, near the door.....like the model T...

What are the other differences between the '28 and '29 pickup?

I really don't like the extra doo-dads on A's either.I took the step plates off my 31 coupe, they were on there when I got it,and I would rather look at 4 holes in the running board than the step plate.I have 8 or 10 of them out in the shed.I also have quails for all the years out there,moto-meters,cowl lights, and radiator stone guards. My 30 open pickup has two tailights, cowl lights, stainless stanchions, stainless cowl band and radiator shell. It's what I had around when I built it.I did use the two tailights and cowl lights because I wanted signals.I call it my circus wagon.People have been hanging bumpers on A pickups for at least 85 years now.I watches an episode of the Three Stooges Saturday night where they were dragging stuff out of the rear of an A pickup,it had rear bumpers on it.They were tucked under it though, not extended out.

There really were not any differences in the actual two parts to the pickup, the cab and the bed. One change is that the outside rear view mirror was moved from a mounting using the two screws that hold the visor on, to the door post. Then all of the other changes for all Model A's from 28 to 29 applied. Fluted lenses, drum taillight, brake system, fan shroud, powerhouse, red steering wheel, then a lot of small changes.

For a '28 closed cab pickup, the rear body / window stampings where different (height of the rear window ?) with a few having a Ford Script stamped above the window.

Back to your original question.. I have made side boards for my Pickup. For the open cabs I like 1 row for closed cabs I like 2 rows of boards. I put them on to protect the paint on the bed edges.

Not a fan of white walls, I do like my hood ornament.

eog, your truck looks great, If it makes you happy that what counts.

I like the side boards. I think they make it look like a working truck. Forgive the whitewalls as they were on when I bought it.

I agree whole heartily. I call this being a traditionalist! My Victoria has the step plates and like those rear bumpers and I will leave them on there even though I would not have wasted my time and money. What really bugs me is the "eye brows" on the headlights and the long wings and propellers on the radiator cap. It's just me, Ed
