Been laying underneath my coupe looking at how to install some later style shocks and was wondering something. Anyone know why ford stopped the frame at the rear axle? You look at the design of the bumper mounts/brackets and think wonder why they just didn't make the frame that much longer? I couldn't see it costing much more than the bumper assembly

There are also shipping considerations. He was distributing parts by rail and ship all over the country (all over the world) to be assembled into Model A vehicles. The longer you make those frame rails, the longer the crates will be and the more cubes you will use to ship them. This was before container ships.

The model A was a vastly improved upgrade from the model T but there are a lot of similarities between the 1926/27 models and the model A. Ford wanted to make affordable cars for folks. He felt that this and mass production would make both a low priced car as well as profits for the company. Bumpers were a new thing for Ford at the time so all they needed was some steel brackets to support the bumpers. Ford kept the car as light as possible on sprung weight. Much of the weight on the model A chassis was unsprung.

I just installed my shock kit from Ken Davis. Good quality kit, not difficult to install, and his kits come with Monroe shocks. Very pleased with the improved ride quality.
