It is widely used, and unlike the bell housing mount, there have been no reports of cracks or other problems caused by exhaust manifold mounting reported on The Ford Barn; at least not in my ten years.

No downside to using the exh port mounting as long as the bolts are correct length (not too short). If an 8BA, mount it rear or side...doesn't matter.

Rock: For best stability be sure to use an engine stand with 4 wheels.
Here's an example of a homemade stand for my 8BA. It held a completely assembled engine.
[url]https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/how-much-does-a-flathead-ford-weight.483150/ Use at least 3 in. dia. wheels. If you decide to make one, I still have the parts painted black and can mail you the full size templates. Tools needed: cutting torch, lathe, arc welder or Mig welder.
If you loan it out be sure to get it back before it "disappears" and finds a new home.

Thanks for the input guys, my customer who made my pressure test plates made me a plate for the exhaust and now is fabbing up bracing and brackets for a modern engine stand for me. It is my first foray into putting a flathead on an engine stand and wanted reassurance.

19forty thanks the the “tip” (no pun intended) and reminder on the 4 wheel stand as I have a 351 cleveland on a three wheel stand and have that constant threat of tipping every time i touch it

Lincoln use the exhaust ports on the V12's. If it worked for those it will certainly work on a V8. Tim

You can't go wrong doing it the way KR Wilson designed. I really like my KRW stand.

And there is also a concern if those exhaust port mounting bolts are too long. I've read posts where someone mentioned having coolant coming out of the exhaust ports after installing their newly rebuilt engine. They determined the cause to be the use of exhaust port mounting bolts that were too long, and damaged an internal water jacket, and/or a cylinder wall after torquing down those mounting bolts that were longer than necessary. A very expensive and disheartening mistake.

Put down the impact wrenches and don't force things. Problem solved.

There is a plate you can buy for them, $50 or $60 and it won’t hurt it.
