Distributor question

I have read several threads about needing to oil my distributor from the top. My screw that is loosened to set the timing did not have a drill hole in the center so I removed it and put a little oil down in the hole under the screw. Have I made a major mistake by doing so and how do I need to correct it if so. I am afraid I have introduced oil where it shouldn’t be. Thanks for any advice.
