Default '36 Grill Questions

I've been looking for an original '36 grill that is in restorable condition but haven't located one yet. I'm considering another option.
My car has a repo grill that I believe was made in Argentina. It's in good condition, but can easily be identified as a reproduction. I'm thinking if the side "wings" were painted body color as on the original deluxe cars it might look more original.

My questions are: What kind of prep is required to get paint to properly adhere to the chrome? I think it could be sprayed with the grill in place with lots of masking, but I'm sure it would be much better to remove the grill. I've never had the grill out of the car, how big of a job is it to remove?

Here's a recent picture, the side panel was not latched when I took it, the fit is actually pretty good.
