Since it seems that the good hobby-type fuel proof paints are no longer being made, I ran a little experiment using a piece of steel painted with Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy that comes in the standard size rattle cans.

After soaking for 3 days in 100% gasoline, there is no sign of damage to the paint. It comes in glossy black, which is not original for Zeniths, but many people seem to like the shiny black.

I had previously tried Acrylic Lacquer thinking that any lacquer would be fuel resistant, but the Acrylic Lacquer dissolved quickly in contact with gasoline.

This should be a good candidate for engine side pans.

I checked with our local Hobby Lobby store and they did not have anything that promised to be fuel proof.

I second Big hammer's post. I thought lacquer paint would resist gas/alcohol - I guess not. I am still thinking of using epoxy paint, like DP90 or SPI epoxy primer. I want a satin finish on my carburetors, not a gloss. I called SPI (Southern Polyurethanes Inc) and ask about their epoxy primer. They said it was UV resistant, which DP90 isn't.

I have not had that experience with epoxy paint. I used Krylon epoxy appliance paint and it faired no better against gas than any other lacquer I had tried. I will try the rustoleum and see if I get a better result. FYI the manufacturer told me that April 1st the new paint will be available.

VHT 650 is a black glossy epoxy paint that dries with a satin finish which is very close to the original luster of the original carb finish.

It might help with any of these paints to give them a couple of days to set up before exposing them to gasoline. Putting them in a warm place might also help.

Did you by any chance dip the Rustoleum painted metal in gasohol? I wonder if 10 or 15% alcohol would damage the paint, as it is a solvent. I plan to use pure gas and not gasohol, but it would be nice to know if alcohol would be a problem.

IF, you can find this paint it is great. It is one of the few paints to say it is fuel proof. Do a search on the forum.

I tried the acrylic lacquer route, even drying in a low oven for a couple of hours. While the paint did not wash right away, it did stain and fade. Even with 10% alcohol the paint should not just wash off. I think there is more to the story, like the fact that many off the shelf paints are water based not mineral.

LustreCote is fuel proof, however it is a glossy finish and , if having your "A" judged you will probable loose points for the glossy finish.

I've been trying to find some of the black Lustrecote for quite a while. Seems there is none to be had. I sort of gave up the chase a couple of months ago. Tin Cup was this the manufacture of Lustrcote that said it would be available after April 1st?

Yes LustreKote is reformulating the paint and should be available after the first of april.

Klass Kote supposedly will resist fuels and harsh industrial environments.. Anyone have experience with it ?

I have just never found anything that worked better. Dries fast and is very durable.

I still have some of the old Aero-Glos paint, but would also use DP-90 if I was painting some other parts with it at the time.
