Default Value of a rebuilt '39 Trans?

Guys, I'm buying a totally rebuilt '39 3-speed from a good friend of a friend who's totally rebuilt the unit as in new gears, synchros, seals, swan shifter etc. - you name it and its been done. Assuming of course its a first class job, what should the value be? He'd like $500 for it which sounds more than reasonable. Again, please assume this to be of professional quality - not amateur. Thanks.

Your friend is a real friend,Buy it. Depending on who is selling and quality of work, a rebuilt trans can start at $600 and go to $1200 and shift towers $150 to $250.

Thanks very much. I thought that would be the case. Looks like my '39 has a trans!

If you buy it from a friend, give him what he is asking. Your friendship is worth much more. I never 'dicker" with a friend.

$500.00 and 'professional' for a rebuilt '39' trans. don't add up in my book.
I suggest that if it was totally rebuilt as you say with new parts, the 'professional' would be losing money on the transaction.
Hardly 'professional' behaviour IMO.

Hi John,
I had the transmission for my '36 rebuilt with all NOS internals here in the UK, by the EFV8 Club's acreditted transmission guy and it cost me four times the amount your man is asking.

I'd bite his arm off if I could get a rebuilt trannie for $500....you lucky guy!

Take the top off and look at the inside before parting with any money.

With new gears alone the transmission is easily worth four times the asking price. Your friend is being very kind letting something of a much greater value go for such a low price.

This thread was started in 2010 not yesterday. Don't know why it came up but if you need to know the going rate look on the auction site under sold items. If you want a fair price contact Barn members like Juergen or Mc Van Pelt.

whats it worth????? what someone's willing to pay!!!!!!! He built it and Knows what it owes him so if your happy part with the cash and SHUT UP dont insult the man and keep the friendship the opportunity to payback his friendship will no doubt arise down the road

Was thinking the same. We have no idea what has gone on between this two gentlemen and their friendship.

The guy’s last post was in 2011, selling his pickup with “rebuilt” transmission.
