Guys & Gals, how often ie. many miles do you replace your spark plugs? As a rough rule if thumb how often do you pull the plugs and clean them. I understand the cleaning of the plugs is dependent on a number of factors.

If it's running good, I leave them alone. I don't clean or re-gap them unless they are fouled or running poorly.

3X plugs? I am not impressed with metric modern plugs, but who am I?
I remember the sand blast plug cleaner. |

The old rule of thumb was about 10K miles for old points ignition. But, thats an old rule, they'll go much farther
The Autolite 3076s have been in mine about 30 yrs. Last edited by Patrick L.; 04-24-2022 at 06:59 AM. |

Gerry, spark plugs are like Apple pie. If they're golden brown they're just right. You should know that.

When you are pulling a fairly steep hill and start getting a miss it is time to look at the plugs.

Ford jeep was missing under a load and it turned out to be the points were bad. Metal transfer to the point arm was the culprit. I filed the points clean, to diagnose the problem, and ordered a set of points. The condenser causes the transfer so definitely changed that. |

I have 18K miles on the 3X reproduction plugs in my Tudor. I have yet to clean them, they still are just fine.

The 3X plugs seem to run very clean in my car.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but should you replace plugs after a head gasket leak? I am in this situation right now.

Don't know if antifreeze does any harm to the electrode or not.

The plugs should be fine after a head gasket leak. Anti-freeze should not harm them.

If the engine is running fine I don't touch them. You might want to just remove and get a reading on how the engine is running.

How is the engine going to run if he removes the spark plugs?
