Default F1 Steering Conversion

I’ve read here and there about conversions to a 48-52 F1 steering box. I’m wondering what the design is that makes it a desirable choice. Is the F1 steering a worm and roller design and what is the ratio?
Did Ford use the same diameter steering shaft on most flathead vehicles?

Thanks,
-Mike

yes, its a rolling sector, and 17 to 1 ratio. I'll add some more, your 34 is 15 to 1 ratio, and the shaft size thru the v8 era up to 48 any way, I dont know about newer models, is the same size. If you have been studying, you know that an F1 box has the steering shaft below the sector shaft, where as the original model 40 has the steering shaft above the sector. I've not done the conversion, but it will change the column angle slightly. Some folks go to an F100 box which has the sector shaft on top, like the original.

We have several 32s with F1 conversions. Two were purchased from Neal in Ca. He is on the Barn and does an outstanding job. The units purchased from Neal are complete and bolt in. Using new or rebuilt parts with nothing overlooked. They are a direct replacement for the OE unit and will accept the original column drop, tube & clamp, horn rod, light switch, and steering wheel.
Basically, the internals are the same as 37 48 Ford passenger cars.
As stated, the worm is below the sector, so it changes the angle of the column.
Done properly in a 32 you will see a one-inch spacer between the column drop and the bottom of the dashboard.
In my opinion it puts the steering wheel in a much more comfortable position.
The reduction in steering effort is well worth the effort to make the swap.
