I am building my Flathead with parts i have saved since the late 60’s. Had fun collecting them as a kid with my Dad. Time has come to put it all together. Would anyone happen to have any cam specs at all for the Isky 1023 for the 49/53 ? I have already tried calling Isky but could not get any info. Thanks Ron in Ft.Myers, Fla.

In-23-68 .375 lift ex-62-18 .345 lift. In .014 ex .014 . Large bore and stroked mercurys.

In 271 duration, 112.5 ICL
Ex 260 duration, 112 ECL Or 112.25 LSA

So, if you have the lifters and the back-cutting tool to prep the block, then you have what you need - if you don't, then you shouldn't attempt to use this cam. |

I had a friend that used one at Danbury speedway back in the 60's. Wasn't worth the effort.

That is true, Ron, but Ed was refering to the marketing success of the cam which was next to zero.
The theory of the larger diameter lifter was ok but remember, he had the 404A at the time which was one of his biggest sellers. |

I have installed the cam in the block with stock diameter tappets so i could examine the contact area on both sides of the ramp. Also with the .100 smaller diameter there will be approx 20 degrees lost on both sides of the ramp which may end up working just fine. This will be an interesting experiment for sure. Different combinations along with trial and error are part the fun. Thank you to all that responded.

Changing the cam and adjusting clearances is not much fun with a flathead, very different than an OHV motor.

My question is, if that cam is designed for a radius lifter, won't the edge of the stock lifter cut into the cam flanks?

Yes, a big difference. BUT, if the lobe remains on the lifter face, without edging, it would not matter if the lifter was a mushroom or not. And, it seems unnecessary for such a lobe profile design to call for the larger diameter lifter face?

If it is a mushroom lifter and larger than 1", it can have higher cam lift rate than the standard 1" lifter. The max lift rate for 1" lifter with a .008 margin = .0085866 per degree. What is the diameter of the mushroom lifters?
Here too, the lifter edge can run into the cam lobe, if that lift rate is exceeded. So, if possible, the lift rate needs to be checked.
