Default Holley 94 carb spring and detent

Just curious what role does the spring and detent play in this carburetor? For example on this carb the spring and detent is behind the choke mechanism. Does this just help the mechanism rotate?

Just keeps the lever in position so it cannot flop around.

To be specific, to hold flapper in open position.

Well stupid me but the ball in first before the spring and now the ball is stuck. I don’t have a clue on how to get it out. Do I even need it?

Remove lever, shoot some penetrating fluid in it, and carefully rap boss on hard surface. Should pop out. I had to drill one once to get it out. Used a small bit, but had extras.

First spray some carb cleaner into the hole to be sure the ball is not stuck in the bottom to some gunk.

Then put a strong magnet on the side of the shaft of a screwdriver near the handle, and then stick the blade of the screwdriver into the hole to touch the ball. That should pick up the ball.
