Is there any way to tell if a muffler is an aries. Is there any ID numbers or ways to ID it as an aries. Not sure if they made a steel muffler.

You use a tape measure!
Aries muffler will be 29 1/4 from front seam to back seam on the tapered muffler. Reproductions will be shorter. The make a steel muffler and a stainless steel muffler. ![]()

Most of the cheaper aftermarket mufflers have the exhaust pipe size reduced in the first bend, due to the bending process. My Aries is the same diameter over the entire length.

That photo is from the Aries muffler website. Aren't they claiming that they are making mufflers from original blueprints?
Do you have a photo with all the dimensions photo shopped into it?

I should do that. Yes, Joe USED the original prints and the canister section is constructed correctly from a functional standpoint. It is far superior to the other options readily available.

A simple way to tell is to inspect the weld along the side of the muffler. The original, and Aries mufflers, have a wide, rather slopppy weld. If you were at the MARC meet in San Diego and saw and heard Ron Rudes special delivery running it has an origial muffler on it.

Did original Model A Mufflers have an embossed part # A-5230 on them? Attached are some photos of an old muffler that I got a long time ago and is barely holding together. I highlighted the part number with soapstone.
I will try and get some better photos when the sun comes around my way and post them. Darryl |

That's a repro. I don't think I have a picture of an original, but there is an original on a very nice 28 Tudor in our club. It does have a large rust hole however.

Attachment 55591
The above attachment is from an article that I wrote when I worked for Arvin. I have a copy of the blue print which was hard to read and I had our drafting department to redraw it. Ron |

My coupe has an Aries muffler and my friend says my car doesn't sound like a Model A. All these years he's used to the sound of those cheap repros. What are you gonna do. I love my Aries.

I believe that the joint that Marco is referring to is the same joint that is used to attach the rear panel to the fender on the the Phaeton style rear fenders.
