After reading information provided by Vince Falter on his website, to a previous post on drive shafts differences, I now see where it is quite logical for a person to modify the later 32-34 tubular drive shaft for Model A use. You would have to take it to a company specializing in "Drive Lines" to have it cut and re-welded to the correct length for the Model A.
This type of shop would be able to dynamic balance the shaft also, which would help reduce vibrations at higher RPM's. Probably any type of driveshaft should be checked for straight, and balanced, as far as that goes. www.fordgarage.com |

Glenn, you are correct that many shafts are off just a tad creating a slight vibration but these are often overlooked and because the shaft is unsupported in the center of the torque tube, they still will generally deflect some. This is real common in Model TT and AA with worm drive rear ends. I know of a gentleman from West Virginia that cut his Model TT torque tube in the middle and modified it to accept a split-bushing, and then machined his driveshaft to accept this bushing. Now when he is driving on tour at 40mph, he does not get that loud "ruh-ruh-ruh" sound most worm-gear rear ends makes at faster speeds nor does he get the vibrations associated with them either.
In shortening the driveshaft, generally they will cut a new taper on the back of the shaft instead of cutting & welding (which was the old Blacksmith way. If you are paranoid about going through that, just buy a new driveshaft from Snyders as the costs will likely be about the same. . |
