HI guys I have a 85 crown vic. With the aod. would it work in a 49 stock ford? Jack.

Jack,
I bought the adapter kit from Speedway and mounted an 1987 AOD transmission to my 8ba. Can't say what year the block actually is, but Mercury crankshaft is 49

Trying to get the TV cable to mount to the 2GC Rochester was a challenge. If I had to do it over I would use later model transmission with TPS on carb and aftermarket control module.

I wanna believe that your AOD is the early one that can run without being hooked up to a mass of wiring and a brain.
If so you are on the right track. (Avoid the "Metric" AOD as it needs computers/wiring while early AOD needs nothing unusual)

stay with the cable and go to Lockar site they have the cable mounts for the Rorchester.

I believe that a 1985 AOD has electronic controls. Going with a mechanical AOD will make things easier. I have a 302/AOD combo from a '83 van and the trans is mechanical with a carb. FYI: the trans has "metric" embossed in the pan. I think they all did but I could be wrong on that.

My AOD book is in the barn, but if I remember correctly Ford went with electronic control module in 1992. It was AOD-E, looks the same will bolt up to older motors, but takes electronic control module to hit the shift points correctly.

Yes Jack, avoid the AOD-E, which has metric embossed on the pan. Go with the older version and save yourself many headaches, wire nightmares and $$$.

I put an AOD in an early Mustang. It was out of a 1988 Crown Vic and is definitely non electronic. Used a LOKAR TV cable and bracket for the carb. Been running trouble free since my daughter was 16. She's 36 now and all I did was reseal it and installed an Art Carr shift kit when I installed it back then.

So it's a good choice if it fits your Flathead.

My '49 F-47 came with an '87 AOD already installed with the Speedway adapter kit and a new starter. I haven't connected a TV cable yet nor is the driveshaft in, but it fits. There is a clearance issue with my floor pan/firewall which I need to figure out, it's about 1/4" too tall, not sure how it will fit in your shoebox.

I put an 86 AOD ‘53 with with an Speedway Adaptor and Lockar linkage. Works great. Gotta be careful and set the throttle pressure correctly or you can burn up the trans.

Also, pay attention to the rear end ratio. If above 3:50, the shifting will drive you up the wall. Solved my problem (3:90) by putting in a $25 Transgo shift kit. Works great.

Could you explain further please, what would drive me up the wall? I have a 3.73 8.8 in the rear. What would the issue be? I am still building the truck so I have time to change things if I need to. This is a scratch build and has never been driven with all these changes.

It is upshift and downshifts that occur or don’t occur at the correct time. The Transgo shift kit is very easy to install by anyone who knows how to use tools. The kit changes the shifts so they occur properly.

OKay Thanks Ardun. Didn't realize the rear end would change the shift points that much, I'll investigate the shift kit required? Is it a specific part number or is there only one for the AOD?
