For the Guru's........which direction do you install this sleeve? I should have paid attention when I removed it. Notice the offset in the spiral. Installing it either direction will pull oil back into the engine. Try'd that. Was going with a one piece seal and didn't like the sloppiness of the fit on the crankshaft. Decided to go old school and use the rope seal. BTW, 1950 8BA.

Not 100% on this but I believe the top on this pic goes IN towards the crankshaft/slingert.

This is a bushing off of an unmolested/never rebuilt engine that shows the seal fully engaged with the spirals towards the front, not towards the crankshaft.

That spiral is there to pull the oil back into the engine...no good if it stops in the middle of the rope seal...
Take a look at the early sheeves that has it built in if in doubt. So spiral goes in towards gear. |

If the crank turns CW, doesn't the bushing have to be installed like 51MERC-CT shows so as to "spiral" the oil back towards the engine?

Spiral dont care which way its installed...same as a bolt it´s either right or left hand...no matter if your turning the bolt or the nut...

I kinda agree, Mike Herman built 100's if not thousands of flatheads and putting on a sleeve backwards would be a rookie mistake which is possible but not likely.

Put your thumbnail in the groove, view it from one end and turn it the way the crank shaft goes (Clockwise when viewed from the front) Which way does your thumbnail move? This will tell you what you want to know without looking at any pictures.

In the picture in #1 post, the top side goes against the crank gear,
